By Day 8 of this Startup Journal, it hit me: I did some things out of order — and that’s okay. But if I could do it again in the cleanest way, here’s how I’d guide someone through the Startup Essentials.
✅ Startup Essentials Checklist (in the right order)
- Create a Business Email
- Use something simple and branded like cityeditiondesign@gmail.com
- This will be the email you give to banks, the Secretary of State, and for all business communications
- Register Your DBA (Doing Business As)
- File through your state’s Secretary of State site
- Use your new email address on the application
- Apply for an EIN from the IRS
- Use your DBA name and your business email
- It’s free, and you’ll use this for banking and taxes
- Open Your Business Bank Account
- Bring your DBA, EIN, and business email
- Keep your finances separate from Day 1
💬 Real Talk:
I started with my original City Edition Printing email address, but when I launched City Edition Design, I made sure to update my contact info to match the new brand. It doesn’t have to be perfect — it just has to get done.

Tomorrow, in Day 9, I’ll talk about building your starter website or landing page — and why you shouldn’t wait until it’s perfect.
