Day 8: The Startup Essentials Checklist – What You Actually Need to Get Rolling

Post Content:

By Day 8 of this Startup Journal, it hit me: I did some things out of order — and that’s okay. But if I could do it again in the cleanest way, here’s how I’d guide someone through the Startup Essentials.

✅ Startup Essentials Checklist (in the right order)

  1. Create a Business Email
    • Use something simple and branded like cityeditiondesign@gmail.com
    • This will be the email you give to banks, the Secretary of State, and for all business communications
  2. Register Your DBA (Doing Business As)
    • File through your state’s Secretary of State site
    • Use your new email address on the application
  3. Apply for an EIN from the IRS
    • Use your DBA name and your business email
    • It’s free, and you’ll use this for banking and taxes
  4. Open Your Business Bank Account
    • Bring your DBA, EIN, and business email
    • Keep your finances separate from Day 1

💬 Real Talk:

I started with my original City Edition Printing email address, but when I launched City Edition Design, I made sure to update my contact info to match the new brand. It doesn’t have to be perfect — it just has to get done.

Tomorrow, in Day 9, I’ll talk about building your starter website or landing page — and why you shouldn’t wait until it’s perfect.
