Welcome back to the Startup Journal — I’m Craig Stephens, founder of City Edition Printing & Design, and I’m walking you through my process of launching an AI startup from home.

Yesterday, I showed you how to fill out the DBA form.
Today, I want to talk about how I submitted it — and why I didn’t just hit “submit” online.

🗂️ Why I Called the Secretary of State’s Office

Yes, you can submit your DBA form online in many states. But I decided to pick up the phone first.

Here’s why:

  • I had a few questions about using my existing EIN from City Edition Printing
  • I wasn’t sure if I needed to attach any extra documentation
  • I wanted to double-check the mailing address and payment process

Speaking to a real person saved me time and gave me confidence that I was submitting everything correctly the first time.

They even walked me through the last steps and confirmed the processing time.

💡 Startup Lesson:

Don’t be afraid to call. In a digital world, a five-minute call can save you a week of mistakes.

Tomorrow, I’ll talk about setting up your business bank account — and why it’s more than just choosing a bank.
